Jazz Improvisation on Bachs' Minuet in G
   Lesson 1

bullet Lesson 1
bullet Lesson 2
bullet Lesson 3

Bach lost his first wife and married Anna Magdalena Wilcken a twenty year old soprano. It was for her that he wrote the little pieces in the Ann Madalena Notebook, including the "Minuet in G." We are going to analyze this song, study the structure and form in which it was written. Because Bach was such an artist on improvisation, we are going to study this song from a different aspect and also improvise on this selection.
Bach received one of his greatest compliments while performing and improvising a half hour on the choral "By the Waters of Babylon", from Reinken.  Reinken was one of the judges trying to fill a new post in Hamburg , and Bach was one of the musicians in the auditions. Quote from Reinken, "I thought this art was dead, but I see that in you it lives."

                      Lesson 1   Instructions:
1. Play the song very legato, and do not use a pedal.
2. Take the time and add your fingering before practicing.
3. (Intermediate Students) What key is this song written in? Write out the scale that is used and add the chords to the scale, and remember to number the chords as we learned.
The answers are shown in the next lesson

(IM7, IIm7, IIIm7, IVM7, V7, VIm7, VII dim 7) and place the
chords over the correct measures. Also, can you find the key change?
