Have you ever had a project that just couldn't get
finished? I knew you would love playing
this piece, but writing this arrangement was very intricate, so it
just took longer than I
thought.
MUSIC IN THE MOONLIGHT
I have been playing this duet for many years, but this is
the first time I actually have
written it in manuscript for my students.
Now you can add it to your repertoire, and let everyone RAVE about
your success.
This arrangement is worth the time
and effort to add to you repertoire so take your
time and memorize the song.
HERE is a guide to tips and tricks learned in the
Intermediate and Advanced/Jazz
lessons and applied to this song.
1) Arranging the left hand using a descending harmony
pattern
In our lessons and free sheet music, I always talk about the descending harmony
in the left hand.
Here is an example of how Beethoven used this in classical
musical.
START with the Eb - Db - Cb - Ab Now you
have the left hand memorized.
2) Notice the left hand chords in measures 5-12
Instead of continuing with the simple octave the
left hand carries out the styling
with and octave with the 5th in the middle. left
hand: Eb - Bb- Eb 1-5-8
You can do this also. Take any song and play the left hand as
an octave with another
chord tone in the 2 or 3 finger. If you are playing the root of the
chord, a 5th will
fall easily into the hand.
3) A practice in playing 3rds measure 7.
Playing 3rds in the right hand is used a lot when
arranging music in any style, country,
pop, hymns, jazz etc.
Take a simple song and add a 3rd below the
melody. It can be a major or minor 3rd,
whichever sounds good to you.

Just learn a few tips and tricks and it becomes much easier.
A new lesson for you, Beethoven's' Moonlight Sonata
and Send in the Clowns duet. It sounds simple and
beautiful but has many
intricacies, a perfect lesson
to enhance octave fingering, separating
the hand, and
learning memorization with chords.
Tips & Tricks
a) memorize by
blocking the melody together in chords
b) memorize the left hand easily when you know the chord patterns.
c) know your key and you will know what notes to play

I have blended songs
together many times when playing jazz. I love the combination
of jazz
and classical. When playing Autumn Leaves, I also play an
improv using Bach styling,
combining 2 genres together.
This is so much fun to play and it's worth the effort to
have
a classic in your repertoire.
There are 3 classes and I am with you guiding you step
by step.
Now you can start your class on
Moonlight Sonata

Artist of the month
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sarah Jane Cion!
Yes, we are highlighting Sarah Jane again this month. I purchased her CD and have been listening to her music.
I have to tell you though, that I had to put her cover picture on my desk to remind me that this is a young women playing piano. I have never heard a women play this type of style on the piano and it is absolutely fabulous.
A small story: When I was studying with Bud Conway
he would play a style of piano using 10ths and comp chords, combined with bass lines, rolling scales and special pedaling. Month after month I would ask him to play this style for me and would definitely let him know I wanted to play like this. He told me that I did not have enough strength in my arms to perform this music and that is why you only hear men playing this type of piano. Finally, after several months of begging, he told me he thought he could teach this to me. He knew I wanted to play like this and designed a special pedaling for me to use to maintain the legato left hand. Well, it took me almost a year of
intense work and I finally was able to play this piano style.
This is why I am highlighting Sarah Jane again, she is absolutely fabulous and has so much control and technically ability that I could hardly believe this was a women playing through my stereo. I like the sounds of jazz, but I also like to hear beautiful melodies and harmonies, not just huge sounds of dissonant chords and jazz scales. She has the perfect combination and I know you will enjoy her music.
She is an inspiration for all students to study and practice scales, and practice technique
at every practice session. Continue practicing
and learning your lessons and I promise you that I can teach
you to play beautiful piano using your own styling and/or
composing your own music.
